The Vega de Ario is located in the Western massif of the Picos de Europa, also known as El Cornión, in Asturias. The location of this meadow provides the Marqués de Villaviciosa refuge with spectacular views of the central massif of the Picos de Europa, also known as the Urrieles. Peaks as Torrecerredo (2,648 m), or Llambrión (2,642 m), and Tesorero (2,570 m) stand out. The refuge also offers views of the most visited peaks from there. Jultayu (1,940 m, 1 hour and 30 minutes one way), an impressive balcony 1,500 m above Caín. El Cuvicente (2,015 m, 2 hours and 15 minutes), Verdilluenga (2,130 m, 2 hours and 15 minutes), etc.
The Vega de Ario refuge is in a privileged location for mountaineers undertaking long treks, such as El Anillo de Picos (a circular route between refuges), as well as for those who want to visit following the park’s marked route, PR PNPE4, with a 530 m elevation gain and an approximate three-hour travel time. To enjoy our homemade menu, featuring local products such as Gamoneo cheese, homemade organic bread, and cold and hot drinks. The refuge is situated at the end of the route coming from Los Lagos de Covadonga, with the option to continue through the Canal de Trea and descend to Caín, providing access to the Central massif from there. Shorter half-day routes can also be taken from the refuge, such as ascending the various peaks mentioned earlier, accessible by following marked trails from the refuge.
