Services

Overnight

The refuge has two shared dormitories with bunk beds, offering a total of 35 beds.

Overnight stays are paid for the right to sleep in the refuge, not for prolonged use of the dormitory during the day. Access to the dormitories is on a first-come, first-served basis from 6:00 pm onwards. Please note that this is a mountain refuge, not a hotel, and the dormitories are intended exclusively for overnight rest.

Guests must vacate the dormitories at breakfast time, whether or not breakfast has been booked, in order to allow for cleaning and proper organisation of the refuge.

Bringing a sleeping bag liner is mandatory, as required in all refuges within the Picos de Europa National Park. If you do not have one, it must be rented at the refuge at a cost of €5. The refuge provides pillows, blankets and duvets, as well as indoor footwear for use inside the building.

Quiet hours and lights out are from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am, to ensure the rest of all guests.

Meals, drinks & picnic

After a day in the mountains, there is nothing better than enjoying Gamoneu cheese and our homemade dishes, prepared without preservatives or artificial colouring, and accompanied by homemade bread made with organic flours.
We offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menu options.

For the following day, don’t forget to reserve your picnic. It includes a sandwich made with bread, with a choice of cured ham, Gamoneu cheese, Asturian chorizo and/or tuna. A vegan hummus option is also available. The picnic also includes an apple and a small bag of walnuts and almonds with blueberries. We do not use aluminium or plastic in our picnic packaging.

If you plan to visit us to enjoy our menu or local products and access the area via the Lakes road, it is necessary to make a reservation and include the vehicle registration number in order to access the Lakes of Covadonga.

Lounge

Our common room has capacity for 40 people and is equipped with a fireplace and heating. We also provide magazines, books and board games, perfect for days when you feel like staying inside the refuge.

The common area can be used at any time. It will only be closed for the time required to carry out morning cleaning. During this period, guests may remain in the rucksack room.

Zona Vivac

It remains available when the refuge is unattended, that is, during the closed season, with a maximum capacity of 6–8 people, on two wooden platforms raised off the ground.

There is a water fountain next to the snow pole, located to the south / southeast of the refuge.

You will need a sleeping mat and a good sleeping bag.

Please keep the area clean and remember that rubbish does not go down on its own.

Water

The refuge offers shower facilities from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Being able to take a shower at Vega de Ario is a real luxury, as water is a very scarce resource in this high-mountain environment.

The refuge is supplied by a natural spring that depends directly on rainfall, and in the Vega we can go up to a month and a half without significant rain. During periods of higher visitor numbers, water consumption increases considerably and reserves can drop very quickly.

For this reason, on some days each year we are forced to close the showers as a preventive measure, in order to avoid emptying the water tanks and to guarantee water for basic needs. In these situations, it is possible that no water will be available for showers upon your arrival.

Please remember that in a mountain refuge, water is primarily for drinking and cooking, so we kindly ask for responsible and considerate use of this resource.

It is important not to waste water, as it may run out.

Comunication

There is no mobile phone coverage at the Vega de Ario Refuge. Signal can only be found approximately 100 metres from the refuge, near the AEMET weather station.

To facilitate organisation and bed management, reservations are made online through our central booking system.
